Chapter 14

Gregory

By the time I make it back to my boathouse, my selkie is shrieking inside of me. I have no idea how to calm him down as I cannot even calm myself down. I am done; it is over. There is no way Daniel will forgive me. My selkie just kept pushing, and when I would not bend, he sent his tears in his place. Those damned tears. I can feel my own tears coursing down my cheeks and know if I were to check them, they would likely be a mixture of my own human ones and my selkie’s silver ones. His anguish almost overwhelms me, and I barely manage to make it inside of my cabin before I collapse. Luckily, I somehow manage to land on my couch, albeit facedown. Normally, I would never cry on the leather, but right now, I just do not care about anything other than Daniel.

When my phone rings, I still bolt upright and fumble through the pockets of my jacket, before finally finding it in the pocket of my pants. I am so discombobulated I cannot think straight and do not see the name before I answer.

“Hello.” My voice is strained and hollow.

“Gregory?”

My breath leaves my body, and for a moment, I cannot pull more back in.

“Daniel?” My tears strangle me, and my beloved’s name comes out garbled. “You called.”

“I did.” He pauses. “Are you okay?”

I cannot believe his compassion. In his position, I doubt I would ever speak to me again. I do not know how to answer the question, so I ask instead, “Are you okay?”

Daniel sighs, the sound soft and fluttery, making my heart and lungs respond in a matching quiver. “Yes, I am. I don’t really understand what happened, Gregory. It was clear your selkie was trying to speak to me, but you are going to have to explain those tears. Why were you so horrified? Why did you run away when you saw your tears were silver? And what do silver tears mean?”

I swallow hard, unsure how to explain this to my human mate. If he were another selkie or even another water shifter, he would know already what my selkie’s silver tears mean.

“Gregory? Are you there?” The concern in Daniel’s voice heightens when I take too long to respond.

“I am here. Just trying to figure out how to explain.”

Daniel laughs nervously. “None of the folktales mentioned this.”

“They wouldn’t. We do not share such secrets outside of the selkie community, and I am so sorry you found out about them this way.”

“What exactly do they do? You seemed very concerned that I might taste one. Are they poisonous?” A pause, then a shattered whisper: “Is your selkie unhappy with me?”

My selkie cries out again, choking me with the fierceness of his denial. “Absolutely not. My selkie adores you as much as I do.”

My mate sounds confused. “Then why did you lick the tears off my fingers and run away?”

I sigh and take a deep breath, afraid that what I have to tell him will scare Daniel away from me forever.
